WHEN CHOOSING AN OPTION FOR STRAIGHT TEETH,
it's important to consider what works best for not only your appearance, but your lifestyle as well.

The Advantages over Braces
While the results may appear the same—a confident, beautiful smile—when you stop and actually compare Invisalign® to other teeth-straightening options, the advantages become quite apparent. Knowing the pros and cons of each option ahead of time will help you make a more confident decision.
Traditional Braces
With regular braces, you may experience some or all of the following: pain, discomfort, mouth sores or injuries caused by the wires, tooth decay (from inadequate brushing and flossing), plaque buildup, tooth discoloration, tooth/bracket breakage, or difficulty eating. As if that weren’t enough, there are also the personal sacrifices—popcorn, chips, bagels, hard-crusted bread, pizza crust, pretzels, nuts, certain candies…plus apples, carrots, corn on the cob, and more.

10 THINGS PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT INVISALIGN TEEN®
1. WHAT IS INVISALIGN® TEEN?
Invisalign® Teen is the virtually invisible way to straighten your teen’s teeth without the restrictions that come with metal braces. Rather than wires and brackets, Invisalign® uses a series of clear, removable aligners that have been custom-made for your teen’s teeth. Your teen simply wears them over their teeth and changes them out for a new set of aligners every week. Little by little, your teen’s teeth gradually shift into place, achieving that confident smile.

2. IS INVISALIGN AS EFFECTIVE AS TRADITIONAL BRACES?
Yes. When worn according to the recommendations of an experienced Invisalign-trained orthodontist, Invisalign Teen can be as effective as traditional braces for the most common teeth-straightening issues. Invisalign can effectively treat mild to severe case, including underbite, overbite, overcrowding and gaps between teeth. The chances are very high your teen will be a great candidate for Invisalign. To find out for sure, call Dr. Montgomery at SmartSmile Orthodontics, your certified Invisalign Teen orthodontist in your area, and schedule a consultation.

3. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PRACTICAL ADVANTAGES OF INVISALIGN TEEN OVER TRADITIONAL BRACES?
If you’ve had braces yourself, you already know the issues associated with metal wires and brackets. With Invisalign, the aligners are removable, so your teen can play sports without the worry of being hit in the mouth by a ball, which can cause real damage with braces. They can also continue playing musical instruments properly, without braces getting in the way. With braces, there is a long list of foods your teen shouldn’t eat, from popcorn to apples and raw carrots. With Invisalign, there are no such restrictions. The removable aligners make it easy to brush and floss normally to maintain proper oral hygiene.

4. WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR INVISALIGN TEEN?
Invisalign can be used for teens who have erupting or erupted permanent dentition—this includes most teenagers. Dr. Montgomery can evaluate your teen’s specific dental issues to determine candidacy.

5. HOW LONG DOES INVISALIGN TEEN TREATMENT TAKE?
The average treatment time is about the same as with traditional braces, but the actual length of your teen’s treatment depends on the severity of their condition and can only be determined by your orthodontist.

6. HOW MUCH DOES INVISALIGN COST?
Invisalign Teen costs about the same as traditional braces. Costs for orthodontic treatment can vary with geography and with the complexity of treatment – Schedule with Dr. Montgomery for full details. Also, check your dental insurance plan—orthodontic treatment with Invisalign Teen is covered by many dental insurance policies.

7. DOES MY TEEN HAVE TO WEAR INVISALIGN ALL THE TIME?
Invisalign® Teen is most effective when worn 24 hours per day and changed every week. Plus, Invisalign® Teen has a built-in assurance check; each aligner has blue indicators that fade over time when used as directed, so the orthodontist can track compliance.

8. WHAT HAPPENS IF AN ALIGNER GETS LOST?
Not to worry—Invisalign® Teen offers six replacement aligners for free! In the event that an aligner is lost, you should inform your orthodontist right away.

9. HOW MUCH TIME WILL BE SPENT VISITING THE ORTHODONTIST?
Invisalign® Teen often requires less time with your orthodontist than traditional braces do. There are no adjustments to make, no broken wires to fix. After the initial appointment, follow-up appointments are usually scheduled for every six to eleven weeks.

THINKING ABOUT GETTING INVISALIGN?

How do the aligners straighten teeth?
Over the course of treatment, you will be supplied with a series of aligners. Each aligner will make slight adjustments to tooth position, a process that is mapped out in advance by Dr. Montgomery, specifically for your situation. When the aligners are placed on the teeth, they cause the teeth to gradually shift from their current position. After one week, you will begin using the next set of aligners, which will continue the teeth straightening process.

What are the primary benefits of Invisalign?
Invisalign® aligners are virtually invisible. No one may even notice that you're wearing them, making Invisalign® a seamless fit with your lifestyle. Invisalign® aligners are removable. For the best results and a timely outcome, aligners should be worn as close to 24 hours per day. However, unlike with braces, you have the flexibility to remove your aligners to eat and drink what you want during treatment. You can also remove the aligners to brush and floss as you normally would, for fresh breath and good oral hygiene. Since your office visits during treatment don't involve metal or wire adjustments, you'll likely spend less time in the doctor's chair. Invisalign® allows you to view your virtual results and treatment plan before you start so you can see how your straightened teeth will look when your treatment is complete. Instead of imagining how much better it can be, you'll be able to see it for yourself.

How long will treatment take?
The length of treatment depends on the severity of your case and can only be determined by your doctor; however, the average case takes about 12 months for adults. The length of time necessary for a teen patient may vary and can be determined by your doctor.

How often must I wear my aligners?
We find that aligners are most effective when worn as close to 24 hours per day and removed only for eating, brushing and flossing.

How many patients have been treated with Invisalign®?
More than 3 million patients worldwide have been treated with Invisalign®. The number of Invisalign® smiles grows daily.

What's the best way to clean my aligners?
Your aligners can be cleaned by brushing them and rinsing them with toothpaste.

Will I need to wear a retainer after treatment to prevent my teeth from moving again?
Yes, whether braces or Invisalign® treatment, wearing a retainer will prevent teeth from gradually shifting back towards their initial position.

Do Invisalign® aligners contain Bisphenol-A (BPA)?
No. Invisalign® aligners do not contain Bisphenol-A or phthalate plasticizers. These aligners are made with USP Class VI medical-grade, high molecular weight, polyurethane resins. Tests have been conducted to determine the biocompatibility of these materials, and show that they are biocompatible and pass all applicable regulatory requirements and thresholds for human wear in the mouth. Of course, as with any medical device, you should consult with your health professional about your aligner or retainer treatment and any applicable risks of use.
